For NHS doctors in England

Does your payslip actually add up?

Most doctors are paid by more than one payroll, and no payroll can see the others. Each applies a tax code as though its pay were your only income. The gap that opens up is invisible from any single payslip — and it can run for years.

The gap nobody can see

A substantive post and a bank contract are two employments. Your main payroll gives you a personal allowance; the second taxes every pound at a flat rate, or gives you a second allowance you were never entitled to. Over £100,000 the allowance tapers away and neither payroll knows.

3 of your 4 closed years don't reconcile — about £15,400 underpaid Written by Pay Audit from one doctor's real payslips. HMRC's own record matched it to the penny, per employment.

HMRC finds this eventually. Finding it first is worth more than a refund — it is the difference between a plan and a demand.

How it works

  1. Drop your payslips in

PDFs straight from ESR, photos, scans, or a zip of hundreds. P60s and your contract of employment go in the same place.

  2. Everything is read on your device

Nothing is uploaded. The figures are checked against the published NHS pay circulars, HMRC rates and NHS Pension tiers — every source cited.

  3. You get a position, not a guess

Every employment combined, year by year, with the exact shortfall or surplus. Where something can't be proven, it says so instead of filling the gap with a number.

  4. And the letters, if you need them

A payroll query and an HMRC letter, written for you, citing the figures and the circulars they come from.

What it checks

Every line of a payslip

Income tax against your code and the bands. National Insurance, pension tier, student and postgraduate loan. Basic pay against the circular for your grade and pay point. Banding, on-call and London weighting.

Every year, combined

All your employments together, which is where underpayments hide. Allowance taper, month-1 codes, weekly and monthly payrolls in the same year, and the four-year claim window.

Your P60s against your payslips

The employer's year-end return held against the slips that make it up. Where they disagree it names the gap — usually payslips you never kept.

Your contract, not just your pay

Against the national terms, the published pay points, and what you are actually paid. Plus where you should be on the pay scale by now, and when the next step falls due.

Arrears and reimbursements

Back-pay confirmed to have gone through tax at the right rate. Course fees and expenses checked for whether they were taxed when they shouldn't have been.

Its own honesty

Every payslip is checked against itself before it is trusted. Where a rate isn't held, or a scan can't be read, it says so rather than producing a figure it can't stand behind.

Your payslips never leave your device

This isn't a policy. It's how the thing is built.

  • Payslips are read inside the page, on your own machine. Nothing is uploaded.
  • Your name and National Insurance number are ignored — they are never read at all.
  • No account, no sign-up, no analytics, no tracking, no advertising.
  • The only thing that ever leaves your device is a licence number, about once a month, to check the subscription is still running.
  • It works with the wifi switched off.

Questions

Is this tax advice?

No. Pay Audit is a checking tool. Every figure it produces is an estimate from what you gave it and from published reference data, and you are responsible for anything you send to payroll or HMRC. For anything material, take professional advice. Full terms are in the terms of use.

Will it find me a refund?

Sometimes. Just as often it finds the opposite — tax underpaid that HMRC will eventually collect. Both are worth knowing, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you a windfall that may not exist.

Which doctors does it cover?

England, on medical and dental terms: resident doctors on the 2016 and 2002 contracts, specialty doctors and specialists on the 2021 and 2008 contracts, and consultants on the 2003 contract. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have different circulars and are not supported. GPs are on different arrangements and are not covered.

How far back can it go?

Reference data is held from 2022/23 onwards, which matches the four-year window for reclaiming overpaid tax. Older payslips still load and are reconciled against each other; no tax position is worked out for them.

Do I need my payslips as PDFs?

They read best that way — a PDF from ESR is read exactly. Photos and scans work through text recognition, which is less reliable, and the app tells you when a figure looks doubtful rather than using it.

How do I cancel?

Use the link in your Stripe receipt, or email us. Your access continues to the end of the month you have paid for and then stops; the free checks carry on working. There is nothing to uninstall and no data of yours held anywhere to delete.

Can I use it on my phone and my laptop?

Yes. A licence isn't tied to one device — paste the same key into both. Your payslips are held on each device separately, because they never leave it.

What if it gets something wrong?

Tell us and we will look at it. The reference data is published and cited in the app, so a wrong rate is fixable and a wrong reading of a payslip is worth seeing. If the app has been wrong about something material in your first month, ask for a refund and you will get one.
